Chunky knit cowl - a quick knitting project

Oh the joy of a quick knitted project! A pair of size 10 circle needles (that I got in a thrift shop for $1 about 6 months ago and haven’t yet had the courage to use) and two balls of chucky yarn (on sale with a coupon because that’s how I roll), a snow day, binge watching TV shows on netflix and in no time at all I had a soft luxurious large cowl. Quick and easy pattern for a knitted cowl or infinity scarf (1)

Here’s a pattern/tutorial if you’d like to try your hand at making your own.

Determine how big you want the cowl to be – I wanted mine to be 40 inches around – then knit a quick swatch I normally do about 20 stitches and about 20 rows and measure how many stitches you need for 4 inches. For me this was 14 stitches was so I needed a total of 140 to give me 40 inches – but I also wanted an odd number of stitches to make the pattern prettier I went with 139
Cast on 139 using whatever method you like – I always use the same “knit-on” method because it works well
Make sure your stitches aren’t twisted and knit the first stitch you cast on which will join the stitches together in a circle
Then simply purl the next stitch and then knit 1, purl…….and repeat for as many rounds as you want
I used 1 and a half balls of yarn to make it approx. 10 inches tall which seemed perfect to me
Cast off and weave in the ends

Of course now that the big winter storm has passed my opportunities to wear my lovely new cowl (or infinity scarf depending on how I wear it) have also dwindled, for example today it’s going to be 28C (82F) and so I don’t even need a sweater let alone a cowl but I’ll have it for my trip home to Ireland next month which will be a lot colder than it is here.

Until then I’ll just admire it from afar!
