This is the first of two knitting projects I finished while in Ireland (and let’s not even start discussing the ones I’ve since started and planned out yet!). The other project I finished was my cardigan which still requires a good blocking before I can call it fully complete and start wearing it.
These are the instantly recognisable Hermione socks from Ravelry – a fantastic free pattern that over 9000 people have made so it seemed like an obvious choice to use for my first pair of socks. I paired it with some Stroll Tonal fingering weight yarn in Blue Violet from KnitPicks. I had a few problems with getting the socks to fit properly. I made the cast on a little too tight but only realised after I already had the leg portion completed.
I decided that I would complete the socks as is and give them to Kathy instead of starting over. As I repeatedly tried them on to ensure that they were the right length though the stitches stretched out perfectly and the only thing that felt tight was that cast on. I still let Kathy have them though. Live and learn, right....better fit next time.
I also did the heel flap the wrong way around. I thought it looked a little off but figured it was a design element. I still think it looks ok the way it is but I didn't even realise it was wrong until I'd completed the pair!
Project 2/15: Hermione Socks
New/Improved Techniques: First time making a sock. Making a heel flap and turning a heel was fun and these ended up taking me way longer than I expected on those tiny size 1 needles.

They look great! That heel flap looks unique too :-)

Ha ha unique is a nice way of putting it! But hey if you're gonna mess up at least fully commit to it right :)

Congratulations on your first pair of socks. I think the heel looks innovative. And I love the yarn with that pattern.

Yes completely.....I just finished a second pair last night....and to think I said not that long ago "why would someone knit socks? That's weird!".....I'll just hang my head over here in shame of my former self :)

Thank you :)

Love them! This is one of my favorite sock patterns (I think I've knit it 4 times, at least!), and it looks fabulous in those colors. I like the heel flap backwards too, it shows off the variegation in the yarn really well. Well done :)

I've knit these for my mom in green but the purple is so lovely I may have to make another pair! Gorgeous :).

Great first pair of socks!! Just a warning, sock knitting is addicting... ;-)

Oh I knew for sure my first pair would have to be purple - it's my favourite too :)

Congrats on the first pair of socks! I did a pair of toe up socks. I see the mistakes, but they are in shoes and under jeans. Who cares. I may try another pair soon and like this pattern you've made!

I really want to try the toe up two at a time socks I hear people talking about about - but so far I haven't had that second sock syndrome I also hear people taking about either!! It's a little addictive making these small knits isn't it

You didn't do the heel flap wrong, you just very intentionally added a new design element! There's over 9000 Hermione everyday socks in the world, but these ones are still unique :)

yes an intentional unique design element - that sounds much better :)

Beautiful socks. I love the color! My problem with making socks is I get one made and lose interest in the second. Great job! http://www.grandmashousepatterns.com
