I was lucky enough to get to go to San Antonio Texas last week for a conference for work. I was exhausted going into the trip….an unexpected overnight work trip to Charleston on the previous Friday put pay to my planned weekend of relaxation and careful packing before the trip. Although I can’t complain too much about the trip to Charleston because it let me stop and shop a bit at the outlet where I was able to buy some much needed “work” tops and shoes that were more appropriate to wear to a conference than my usual lab attire.
I met up with some friends from Ireland and California and had a great time exploring the Riverwalk area – which for anyone who has never been in San Antonio is a really fun stretch of restaurants and bars along a riverfront that is set down below street level right in the heart of the city. In fact the conference center opens out on the Riverwalk so it was a very natural progression to go from talks/meetings to the bar!
Most of the trip was a mentally exhausting (but informative and inspiring) blur of powerpoint presentations there were quite few non-scientific highlights of the trip too including:
Meeting a real-life cowboy….in jeans chaps, shirt waistcoat, holster and pistols…..pistols he had to surrender to the bar man!
Going to a Lakers v Spurs basketball game and having it end up being a very close game that went to extra time and was won/lost in the last second of the game!
The best moment of the trip though has to have been the moment I walked back in through the front door and got loved on by the most excited puppy I’ve seen in a long time!
