I finished the Anna blanket about 2 weeks ago – the day before I left for San Antonio actually. The last time I shared my progress I was just about the start the middle panel and I was debating what I would do. The pattern uses a lattice type stitch that although looks nice I just didn’t feel like it “popped” enough to be a center panel on a blanket of this size. So I spent about a week coming up with a cable design I liked. I tried about 3 different designs before I felt like the cable was the right size (I based it on this but changed it all so that the cables were 3 stitches wide), then I added in a smaller twist cable and an bit of seed stitch because it’s one of my favourites. Let's just say I became a lot more comfortable with making excel knitting charts while designing this panel!
Once the center panel was finished I had one final step left before I could call it complete – seaming. I tried out mattress stitching to seam the panel together this time (prior to this I’ve just done a “hold them together and sew over the edges” kind of stitch). I found this video really helpful. It took a while to do especially for all five panels, but nowhere near as long as I thought it would. I’m talking hours rather than days. I also loved the point where you pull the yarn and all the stitches line up perfectly.
I couldn’t resist adding my little label to this blanket either – because while it didn’t take as long as the quilt it still took ages (at least 2 months) even if it didn’t feel like that. Doing a blanket in sections is a great way to not get lost in the enormity of the project, each section felt like a new project. I also have a ton of yarn left over – at least a third of the 20 balls of knitpicks brava worsted that the pattern called for. In fairness I did make the blanket shorter than the pattern so it’s not too surprising but whoa how big would it have been if I’d used all the yarn! All that is left now is to wrap it up and gift it away to my friend as her house-warming/Christmas present.
[I also really need to sort out my big camera because all these phone photos are awful :(]
