When little Boomer first came home with us he was a tiny bundle of warm cuddles. He would blissfully sleep in our arms for hours only to wake up play a little and then repeat. It was puppy cuddling heaven. I was smitten.
So imagine how I felt when within the space of a few weeks that little puppy grew and grew and suddenly this exuberant independent little fellow wanted nothing to do with cuddles anymore. In fact he was so independent and anti-napping that we had to enforce “crate nap time” to make sure he wasn’t over exerting himself.
So I had a once cuddly puppy that now no longer wanted cuddles….let’s just say I was a little devastated given that everything I know about dogs comes from my relationship with my first dog Charlie (who now lives with my parents in Ireland).
This is me and Charlie and this is how we spent every evening ever since he was a pup – either here watching TV in the kitchen cuddling or lying on the couch - he was the ultimate cuddle monster. He used to hold out his front paws like a child and ask to me picked up onto my lap for cuddle. Adorable isn’t it?
Then just as I’d slowly come to terms with the fact that Boomer was never going to be a cuddly lap dog something changed. Every day when I came home from work I would sit on the back step while he ran around the garden – then one day he jumped up onto my lap and sat there for a cuddle. I was so happy I took a photo to show Kathy. It happened again the next day and soon enough it became a “thing” – and I used to sit there for 10-15 mins at a time every day just to enjoy those cuddles.
Slowly but surely the cuddles increased. When Kathy was training for her marathon Boomer and I would walk in the park and wait for her to finish running before heading home together. Whenever I sat on a bench Boomer would hop up beside me and jump straight up onto my lap. He gets more than a few awhs and smiles from passers-by when he does this!
Flash forward another few months and Boomer is a cuddle monster in his very own unique way. He loves to lie beside or on top of me when I knit on the couch and yesterday he asked me to pick him up and hold him (I know this because when I put him down he immediately pawed my legs until I picked him up again). I loved it and it made me think of Charlie.
Oh Boomer you’re my bossy little independent cuddle monster and I couldn’t be more smitten!
[I also drive Kathy crazy because everytime Boomer cuddles me I scream "quick take a picture!"]
