As you know I’m very new to sewing and I’ve completed a few little projects so far; napkins, pillowcases and cushions. Basically lots of little things that used small amounts of fabric, perfect for practising getting straight lines and making seams and thinking about how to construct something.
My plan when I started sewing was that I wanted to become good enough to make my own quilt. But that plan has changed. Oh I still want to make the quilt (I’m already looking for the perfect fabric) but starting to sew coupled with copious amounts of Project Runway has made me want to make my own clothes.
So with that in mind I figured I start with something that construction wise is pretty easy and very easy to wear. A Maxi Skirt! I tried to find a good tutorial online but the more I looked at, the more confused I got and I almost convinced myself not to do it. Then I threw caution to the wind and decided to wing it. I figured it couldn’t be too hard so long as it fit right.
Surprisingly, it turned out pretty good, it’s totally wearable and I think it looks great! – there are only one or two things that I’ll do differently when I make a second one and if anyone is interested I’ll share a tutorial then. I’ve worn this a couple of times now, even though it’s a little too heavy for the hot SC weather right now and it’s gotten compliments and it’s a lovely feeling to be able to tell people “ I made it”.
In more sewing related news I’m doing a class – yay! We’re learning how to make a blouse from a pattern and so far I’ve learnt loads. I was 4 hours last Saturday and we’ll finish the blouse this Saturday. I’m really glad I took the plunge and did the class because even though we haven’t finished the blouse yet I already feel confident enough to start pattern shopping and planning out different projects that I feel like I could accomplish now.
