Some people might think it’s strange to have reached 26 without having ever camped before, but I'd hazard a guess that those people didn't grow up in Ireland, where camping would inevitably consist of trying to sleep in a freezing cold tent while it lashes rain outside. Nothing about that appeals to me – but since I now live in South Carolina, a state with an abundance of national parks, I took the plunge, bought a tent, crossed my fingers for good weather and headed off to Edisto Island State Park.
It was a great weekend, the camping portion when surprisingly well. The only real downside for me was the multiple mosquito bites I came home with (even though I'd sprayed myself in repellent). The exploring portion of the trip went even better. We visited Botany Bay, a plantation and wildlife reserve which had some great views……. and a chance to get some "wild-life" pictures, the crabs fighting were very cute to watch.
This roadtrip meant that little Boomer went on his longest ever car ride – and he was a total angel the whole time. In fact camping with a puppy wasn’t as hard as I expected at all. I think all that sniffing and running around really took it out of him. It was so much fun when he encountered the ocean for the first time – he jumped right in! Which resulted in a very sandy puppy indeed!
But my favourite part was simply hanging out at the campfire, making s'mores (for the first time!), enjoying the peace and quiet of nature and listening to the ocean as I feel asleep.
Camping again is a definite must!
